Brundle tops test at Silverstone

Alex Brundle topped the first Formula 2 test of the season on Silverstone's Grand Prix circuit this afternoon

The 20-year-old son of ex-Formula 1 racer and BBC commentator Martin Brundle set a best time of 1m50.221s in the overboost-enabled afternoon session, finishing almost 0.3 seconds ahead of former GP3 racer Miki Monras.

Series returnee Mihai Marinescu, Formula Palmer Audi graduate Ramon Pineiro and former Ferrari Driver Academy member Mirko Bortolotti rounded out the top five in the 22-car test.

Brundle, who is returning to the category this season after a year in British Formula 3, said: "It's always nice to be on top and now we've just got to stay there.

"I'm not getting complacent by any means and I've got to keep pushing. We had a decent race car at the end there and I pulled it out the bag a bit on the lap, but I still need to build more consistency."

In the morning session, run without the overboost, Brundle was second behind fellow Briton Jack Clarke, who set a best of 1m51.537s. Pineiro, Marinescu and Monras completed the top five.

As well as a number of 2010 F2 runners that have not yet been confirmed for this season, some category newcomers also tested. These included former British F3 racer James Cole, European F3 Open competitor Jose Luis Abadin, and Formula BMW Pacific graduate Sunghak Mun.

The next pre-season F2 test will take place on the new Snetterton 300 circuit on Wednesday March 30.
