Brumos keep win despite penalty

The Brumos Porsche team have kept their Daytona 24 Hours win despite being penalised for their car being underweight in the post-race inspection

The No.58 Riley-Porsche driven by David Donohue, Buddy Rice, Darren Law and Antonio Garcia, was found to be more than 12lbs. below the minimum weight allowed by the Grand Am rulebook.

According to section three of the Daytona Prototype regulations, cars running engines below four litres must weigh a minimum of 2225lbs and those with bigger engines must be over 2275lbs less fuel, less driver race ready.

The No.58 Brumos car falls into the first category as it runs a 3.9-litre powerplant, based on that of the Porsche 911. Their car was found to be at 2213lbs by Grand Am officials on their scales.

As a result, the team, drivers and manufacturer were docked five championship points, which means the No.01 Ganassi team of Juan Pablo Montoya and current Grand Am champions Scott Pruett and Memo Rojas are leading the standings. Brumos were also fined $5000.

Although in other series the win would have been taken away from the team as a result of being underweight, as Grand Am operates under NASCAR's wing, it takes a different approach when rule violations are found on post-race inspection.

As in this case, the race results remain unchanged and the driver and team found to be outside the rules take on financial and/or points penalties.
