Bourdais pole, Wilson third

Sebastien Bourdais will start Sunday's Tecate/Telmex Grand Prix of Monterrey from pole position. The Frenchman put all thoughts of complex qualifying procedures, and last minute rule changes, to one side, and set the fastest time to earn another championship point, and the all-important pole slot

After the complications of Friday's first qualifying, Champ Car officials reverted to a tried and tested qualifying procedure for Saturday. Bourdais took his Newman-Haas run car by the scruff of its neck, to set a 1m13.915s, the fastest time of the weekend, and claim his second championship point of the weekend. Without any doubt...

Local hero Mario Dominguez had held the top spot for a while in the 35 minute session, but his best of 1m14.343s was quite a way from Bourdais' best. Even so, the Mexican will still start from the front row.

Justin Wilson continued to impress with third place. The English rookie has been in the top five all weekend for Conquest Racing, and is aiming high for the race. "My engineers did a great job in the basic setup that we started this weekend which was very good. All of the changes we made have been very small, just to try things. Sometimes we have not liked it and gone back to the basic setup and sometimes we have kept it on.

"Each time we go out," continued the ex-F1 driver, "we just get quicker and as the track gets more grip, and as we find out more with the car set up, we just keep making improvements."

Bruno Junqueira will start from the outside of the second row. The Long Beach runner-up was far from happy after Friday's sessions, but he can console himself with the fact that his 1m14.405s puts him ahead of Paul Tracy (sixth) on the grid. In between them will be Tracy's teammate Patrick Carpentier.
