Bourdais fastest in morning practice

Sebastien Bourdais put himself back at the top of a Champ Car session with the fastest time in practice at Long Beach on Saturday morning

The Newman/Haas/Lanigan Racing driver put in two laps that were enough to beat provisional polesitter Will Power by 0.25 seconds. The Team Australia driver saw teammate Simon Pagenaud continue his strong form with third fastest time.

Bourdais' teammate Graham Rahal got within a tenth of breaking the 68 second barrier, while Mario Dominguez had to uphold Forsythe Championship Racing honour after teammate Paul Tracy spun into the wall on the exit of Turn 1.

Tracy, who was on cold tyres, lost the rear end of the car and nosed into the wall 17 minutes into the 75-minute session,

He only damaged the nosecone of his car despite a hard hit, but the Canadian has been taken to hospital for precautionary x-rays on his back muscles.

Alex Tagliani and Justin Wilson were sixth and seventh fastest, but the Briton was nearly involved in needless accident in the pitlane when Bourdais was waved out of his pitbox directly into the RSPORTS driver's path.

Neel Jani was right up with PKV Racing team-mate Tristan Gommendy this morning, after being more than a second off the Frenchman's pace in qualifying yesterday, while Minardi USA continued to struggle.

Robert Doornbos suffered with understeer, while Dan Clarke tapped a wall, breaking a toe-link. Once that was fixed, he went into a run-off and fried the clutch trying to rejoin.
