BMW raises concern over WilliamsF1 chassis
The current contract renewal negotiations between WilliamsF1 and BMW Motorsport were enlivened by Gerhard Berger yesterday. The BMW Motorsport co-director told German magazine Kicker that the new Williams displays chassis deficiencies, noting that the Munich manufacturer's latest V10 is smaller and lighter than its predecessor. "It seems the aerodynamics have not succeeded fully," Berger said. "The car doesn't meet my expectations. It's up to Williams to correct it."
In an interview published less than a week before the start of the F1 season with the Australian GP, Berger continued: "Unfortunately the new car has problems - it's not fast enough. But we have no influence on the chassis. We have to rely on Williams. I hope they come up with something this week.
"At this point, we're somewhat slower than Ferrari and McLaren, and our engine is not able to compensate for that. We can't be happy with the performance."
Berger said that the two companies were still talking about future collaboration and confirmed that BMW wanted more influence. "To continue the cooperation is surely desirable, but only under certain circumstances," he continued. "We are discussing, we are negotiating. The decision will come only in a few weeks. Many points still have to be discussed."
