You’ll struggle to find anyone else in our top 50 with a worse second-half-of-the-season qualifying record than this four-time BTCC champion – which just emphasises what a fantastic racer Ash Sutton is.
In his last season with Alliance Racing’s fourth-generation Ford Focus ST, he by hook or by crook remained ahead in the points until August thanks to audacious racecraft and some crafty strategy on tyres.
It wasn’t until the long straights of Silverstone (the hatchback shape proving a handicap) and a qualifying miscue at the Brands Hatch finale that he slipped away from Tom Ingram.
