Angry Vasser attacks 'crazy' driving

Jimmy Vasser attacked both CART's organisational skills and the driving standards of his rivals after finishing third in the Honda Indy 300

The Houston winner, looking for a new drive after being dropped by Ganassi for 2001, led much of the race in the middle stint but then felt he lost out when CART declined to open the pits until the field had been picked up by the pace car during a late race caution. Vasser felt he would have maintained his lead had he been allowed to pit as soon as the yellows came out.

"I really felt we should have won that," he said. "Kirk Russell (CART's chief steward) closed the pits on that caution and just ruined the race for everyone on our strategy. I don't know what goes through their minds when they make these decisions."

He also attacked his rivals after a race repeatedly interrupted by collisions. Vasser's car was heavily scarred by the end of the race, having been involved in contact with Dario Franchitti, Oriol Servia and Christian Fittipaldi.

"I had a move on Christian and he just kept coming down on me until he basically took himself out," Vasser said. "Some guys are driving like crazy right now. Oriol Servia passed a load of people by missing a chicane then took out Paul Tracy, a championship contender. I don't know how some of these young guys can get rides when I can't."

Vasser tested a Ganassi-owned NASCAR Winston Cup machine earlier this week but is unlikely to have trouble finding an alternative ride in CART after taking a win and a third place in the last two races. He has been linked with Walker Racing, Mo Nunn Racing, Forsythe Championship Racing and the returning Hogan-Penske outfit.
