Andros Trophy day 2:Tarres wins overall

An extremely close day of racing saw Marcel Tarres take victory on the second day of the Serre Chevalier round of the Andros Trophy

The Citroen Xsara driver finished on equal points with five-times champion and yesterday's winner Yvan Muller, but Tarres took the victory by setting the fastest time during initial qualifying.

This is Tarres' seventh victory on Serre Chevalier's ice-track, which has held a winter race almost every year since 1972.

After engine failure forced him to withdraw from the previous round at Alpe d'Huez, the Frenchman was racing without any penalty weight, unlike the Globalstar Astra of Muller which carried an extra 60kg of ballast.

Muller took the first day win and started strongly again today (Sunday) by dominating the first three-lap heat. However, Tarres fought back, taking the second heat and an excellent performance from his Citroen team mate Anthony Beltoise demoted Muller to third.

Laurent Fouquet continued to impress in the AMV-sponsored Renault Clio and finished fourth overall giving the Frenchman the overall lead in the two wheel steering Promotion category. Jean-Michel Neyrial lies second in the category, with Wilfried Merafina is a distant third.

Emmanuel Collard made a return to the series and slowly re-acclimatised to the ice. The former Formula 1 test driver finished eighth in Stephane Peterhansel's Nissan Micra.

The next round of the Andros Trophy is at Pas-de-la Casa in Andorra next weekend. Tarres will be looking to even the series as Muller is due to start the defence of his Ice Racing Series International title at Chamonix, sharing a SEAT Cordoba with Bertrand Balas and Dany Snobeck.
