Al-Ain scores first Superleague win
Probably the smallest club on the Superleague Formula grid scored victory in Sunday afternoon's reverse grid race at Estoril in Portugal, as Paul Meijer cashed in on race dominator Enrico Toccacelo's poor fortune to grab an unlikely win for middle eastern Al-Ain team
The race had three leaders in the first couple of laps, with poleman Max Wissel (Basel) demoted by Tottenham's Dominik Jackson at the first corner on the second tour.
Toccacelo (Borussia Dortmund) quickly followed suit, passing first Wissel and then Jackson to hit the front.
The Italian quickly pulled away, opening out a substantial lead before his pitstop. His Zakspeed team sent him on his way after a leisurely pitstop, and he was heading for a crushing victory when his oil pressure began to fall, cutting out the engine.
To start with, he managed to control the time loss, but as the issue worsened he was literally powerless to stop Meijer from cruising past him on the start/finish straight with just three laps to go.
Robert Doornbos, who started 17th for AC Milan, was a star of the race, carving his way through the field to finish second: "I hope the fans enjoyed that, because I certainly did - I had a big smile on my face. I was passing people inside, outside, everywhere in the opening laps."
Galatasaray finished third, with Alessandro Pierguidi just holding off a charging Antonio Pizzonia for Corinthians.
Series leader Bejing Guaon finished fifth with Davide Rigon another star player after he was forced to start from the pits after a gearbox repair job had to be finished.
He too encountered an oil pressure problem in the late stages, which allowed Pizzonia to pass him, but fifth was a great result after closest challenger Liverpool finished a lapped 12th.
Adrian Valles clashed with Franck Perera at Turn 6 on lap five, an incident that broke the Liverpool car's front wing and left the Roma machine stranded in the gravel.
Valles claimed Perera braked early and caught him out, but the real damage has been done to his title ambitions, as PSV Eindhoven has jumped up into second place thanks to Yelmer Buurman's eighth place.
Beijing's lead is 35 points with four races remaining.
