50th anniversary of Matra F1 title to be celebrated at Chantilly

A remarkable gathering of nine racing Matras at the Chantilly Arts & Elegance Richard Mille will honour the 50th anniversary of the company's world championship title with Jackie Stewart

Stewart took the first of his three Formula 1 world championships for Ken Tyrrell's team in 1969, and Matra won the constructors' title with the Cosworth DFV-powered MS80.

That achievement will be marked at the annual Arts & Elegance display at the spectacular Chantilly Castle, north of Paris.

The earliest car on show will be the ex-Jacky Ickx MS5 chassis 11 from the 1967 Formula 2 season. MS11 chassis 03 was raced in '68 by Henri Pescarolo and was the first completely French F1 car since '56, using the sonorous V12 Matra engine.

MS80 chassis 03 was Stewart's reserve car for the 1969 season when he took six grand prix wins on his way to the title. The MS80 was designed by Frenchman Bernard Boyer.

From a year earlier will be MS10 chassis 02, the car that Stewart took to one of his finest wins in a rain-hit Nurburgring race.

The four-wheel-drive MS84 F1 car from 1969 will also be present, along with the MS650 sportscar as used in the '70 Tour de France Automobile.

Finally, the ex-Chris Amon MS120C chassis 04 from '72 represents the final stages of Matra's five years in F1.

Matra started building cars in 1964 and added three Le Mans victories to its F1 success. Among Chantilly Arts & Elegance Richard Mille's ambitions is the celebration of French excellence in worlds as diverse as art, culture and technology.

In motorsport, Matra holds pride of place as the make revolutionised the sport in the late '60s and early '70s by bringing in new concepts including monocoque chassis with structural fuel tanks and innovative manufacturing methods from the world of aviation.
