Acropolis Rally, Mugello MotoGP weekend

Live Text

Sort by
As today's action kicks off, let's look back at the stories from yesterday. Here's what happened:

Mike Conway won the first IndyCar race of the weekend in Detroit
Dani Pedrosa stole Mugello MotoGP pole position from Jorge Lorenzo
Jari-Matti Latvala stormed into a commanding Acropolis Rally lead
Reigning DTM champion Bruno Spengler claimed pole for today's race in Austria
Kevin Magnussen beat Formula Renault 3.5 rival Antonio Felix da Costa at Spa
Narain Karthikeyan inherited the Auto GP victory after on-track winner Kevin Giovesi was penalised post-race
Denny Hamlin made it two NASCAR Sprint Cup poles in a row at Dover
Felix Rosenqvist honed in on European F3championship leader Raffaele Marciello with his second win of the day at Spielberg
FR3.5 - Spa: As the FR3.5 cars get ready to go out, it's worth noting that in the supporting Formula Renault Eurocup qualifying session just now, teenage Ferrari junior sensation Antonio Fuoco has taken pole position.

This is the Italian's first weekend in the Eurocup, and he has just a handful of car races to his name in his career so far.
Nasser Al-Attiyah

Nasser Al-Attiyah

Acropolis Rally: The closest fight is over fourth place. Nasser Al-Attiyah's lead over Andreas Mikkelsen is down to 15.8s as the Volkswagen driver takes 10s off the Ford man.

"I know Andreas will push a lot, but I don't want to take too many risks," says Al-Attiyah.

Mikkelsen's time is fastest on the stage so far.

Meanwhile Ogier is already onto stage 12, which is just a few kilometres away and starts 19 minutes after SS13.
MotoGP - Mugello: The riders are out in Italy for the warm-up session. After a lot of sunshine, some riders are on wet tyres this morning to deal with a damp track. It's likely to clear up in plenty of time for the races, though.
Acropolis Rally: No dramas on SS11 yet. Evgeny Novikov takes another second out of Mikko Hirvonen but there is still 23s separating them in the battle for eighth.
Acropolis Rally: Sebastien Ogier is going to have to settle for 10th place this time unless there is attrition ahead.

He will have an eye on the powerstage bonus, but running first on the road will make that tough.
Latvala

Latvala

Acropolis Rally: Running order this morning is as follows: Ogier, Novikov, Hirvonen, Ostberg, Prokop, Mikkelsen, Al-Attiyah, Neuville, Sordo, Latvala.

There are just four stages left, 11 kilometres of Pissia then straight into 30km of Loutraki. Back to service, then a repeat of that loop.
FR3.5 - Spa: For the first time this weekend, the track action has kicked off on time at Spa. The Belgians promised that it would be a sunny morning rather than a foggy one, and they were right. Now, how long until it rains?
Acropolis Rally: The final day is about to begin in Greece. Just four stages remain to decide the result, but on this rough terrain, don't rule out some last-minute shocks.

Mike Conway

Mike Conway

IndyCar - Detroit: Full report of Conway's incredible win now online
IndyCar - Detroit: What a stunning win for Mike Conway. The Brit celebrates with Zanardi-style donuts, and a third for Wilson gives Dale Coyne Racing a 1-3 finish. Joining them on the podium is Ryan Hunter-Reay.
IndyCar - Detroit: Briscoe walls the Panther car with three laps remaining. Local yellows only - barring another incident, the race will stay green to the finish.
IndyCar - Detroit: Six laps to go, and Conway is miles ahead. Barring disaster, he'd got this in the bag. Hunter-Reay has second locked up, but Wilson is under all sorts of pressure from Dixon for third.
IndyCar - Detroit: Dale Coyne Racing was briefly running 1-2, but a slow pitstop has dropped Wilson to third.

Meanwhile, Conway is 17s ahead of Hunter-Reay, who currently isn't as fast on the harder tyres as he needs to be. 11 laps left.
IndyCar - Detroit: Just as Conway was starting to get bogged down behind lapped traffic, he swings into the pits. That was a 28 lap stint from the Brit. He's now got the reds on, and 18 laps to go.
IndyCar - Detroit: Hunter-Reay has pitted, and Conway is now out in front on his own. He has a 20s lead, but still hasn't put the reds on yet. Wilson is currently in second place.

In other news, points leader Marco Andretti has lost several laps in the pits after damaging his car in a clash with Charlie Kimball. Somewhere, Saavedra is doing a fist pump.
IndyCar - Detroit: Conway passes Hunter-Reay for the lead. The Brit is on the harder compound tyres; Hunter-Reay is on the reds. Both last pitted about 20 laps ago. There's also a good battle for third shaping up between Power and Wilson.
IndyCar - Detroit: Penalty for Viso for passing before the green, and weirdness for Hinchcliffe, who got one of the tyres used to mark the inside of the kerb stuck behind his front wheel. The Canadian is forced to pit.
Indy - Detroit: The first lap of the restart hasn't been great for Dario Franchitti, who has been passed by Power, Kanaan and Wilson.

Meanwhile, a replay of the Saavedra crash shows the Colombian giving Andretti a solid double-bird as he drove past a lap after the impact. Will Power would be proud.
Indy - Detroit: AJ Allmendinger has taken the blame for the first lap accident that put him out of the race.

"I just ran into the back of Scott Dixon. It was my fault. I'm trying hard, but that's just not good enough."
IndyCar - Detroit: Another yellow - Sebastian Saavedra has been tipped into the wall at Turn 6 by Marco Andretti. Race control has already reviewed the incident and declared that no action will be taken.

The highlight of the restart was Dario Franchitti driving around the outside of Will Power to take P3. Hunter-Reay leads from Conway.
Joey Logano

Joey Logano

NASCAR - Dover: Joey Logano gets a win in the Nationwide race.

That's the third time in a row he has won at the 'Monster Mile' in NASCAR's second-tier series.

Kyle Busch looked like he might be on course to add to his Friday evening Truck victory until he took on four new tyres at a late pitstop where most of his rivals settled for two.

Results:
1 Joey Logano; 2 Brian Vickers; 3 Matt Kenseth; 4 Trevor Bayne; 5 Kyle Busch; 6 Kasey Kahne; 7 Sam Hornish Jr; 8 Austin Dillon; 9 Regan Smith; 10 Kyle Larson.
IndyCar - Detroit: An internet slowdown thwarted the last couple of updates, so here's what you've missed:

1. Sato ran out of fuel and brought out the yellows.
2. Leaders pitted, Hunter-Reay has leap-frogged Conway for P1.
3. Race about to go green. Tagliani hits the wall at Turn 3. Race stays yellow.
Felix Rosenqvist

Felix Rosenqvist

European F3 - Spielberg: It's been a superb day for Felix Rosenqvist in Austria.

With championship rival Raffaelle Marciello only managing fourth and 13th following his tough qualifying session, a double win for Rosenqvist has brought the title contest alive again.

Daniil Kvyat couldn't convert any of his poles to wins on Saturday, but has another chance in race three on Sunday morning.

Here's a recap of what happened in race one and race two.
DTM - Spielberg: Tyre choices for the start of tomorrow's race are now out.

Starting on options are Spengler; Paffett, Mortara, Albuquerque, Farfus, Wickens, Green, Tomczyk, Wehrlein, Molina, Wittmann, Scheider.

The remaining nine drivers start on standard Hankooks.
Jari-Matti Latvala

Jari-Matti Latvala

Acropolis Rally: Leg two started with Evgeny Novikov dominating - but then he picked up a puncture and other car damage.

That gave Jari-Matti Latvala the lead and since then he's been storming away from Dani Sordo and Thierry Neuville.

Mads Ostberg, Mikko Hirvonen, Evgeny Novikov and Sebastien Ogier are all mounting fightback drives further down the points, and Robert Kubica retains a commanding WRC 2 lead.

Here are the full AUTOSPORT reports from the morning and afternoon loops.
IndyCar - Detroit: IndyCar has announced that Derrick Walker will brief the media tomorrow morning. Expect the words 'aero' and 'kit' to feature prominently.

In the race, it's currently a two-horse show after 15 laps. Hunter-Reay is shadowing leader Conway, but the rest of the field is about 7.0s down the road.

DTM - Spielberg: Here's a recap of the full report from qualifying, where champion Bruno Spengler resisted pressure from rookie BMW stablemate Marco Wittmann to take his first pole of 2013.
IndyCar - Detroit: Also on the move is Dario Franchitti, who is up to fifth. The Scot is one of only a handful of drivers to have started on the softer tyres. Moving in the other direction is EJ Viso, who is drifting back through the pack with an engine hiccup.
European F3 - Spielberg: Some late penalty news. Josh Hill and Sven Muller have been docked five places on the race-three grid for race-two offences; Hill for failing to slow sufficiently for yellow flags and Muller for causing the collision that put himself and Latifi out. Muller's Ma-con team-mate Andre Rudersdorf has been excluded from race two, meanwhile, due to his car's lubrication system not venting into a catch tank.
IndyCar - Detroit: After four laps under caution, the race is back to green. Will Power's on a bit of a charge and is up to fourth, while Dixon managed to get his wing repaired under yellows and get back out without losing a lap. Conway still P1.
IndyCar - Detroit: ... but the third corner is another matter. AJ Allmendinger got squeezed between Scott Dixon and someone else - maybe Justin Wilson. Allmendinger was launched into the air and crunched into the barrier; Dixon has pitted with a damaged rear wing. Conway leading.
IndyCar - Detroit: Green flag! Everyone is safe through the first couple of corners.
IndyCar - Detroit: The start to the first of this weekend's two IndyCar races at Detroit is a couple of minutes away.

IndyCar - Detroit: Pre-race national anthem is a family affair for champion Ryan Hunter-Reay.
IndyCar - Detroit: The first of this weekend's two IndyCar races is still an hour or so away, and in the meantime the Grand-Am field is racking up an impressive spares bill.

Worst of the accidents came at the start when Memo Rojas was tipped into the wall by Gustavo Yacaman, and then sideswiped by John Pew. All drivers are fine, but the Ganassi BMW was trashed.

The field is under yellows for another incident at the moment, with Max Angelelli leading and 22 minutes to go.
