Zuber takes Silverstone pole
Andreas Zuber will start Saturday's eighth round of the GP2 Series from pole position after a crazy qualifying session at Silverstone on Friday afternoon
Cold weather conditions caught out many on new tyres, including series leader Timo Glock. Zuber's iSport teammate will start down in fifth after spinning off at Club on his out lap on his second set of tyres - but he wasn't alone in doing so on cold rubber.
Xandi Negrao started the ball rolling, spinning as he exited the pits. Vitaly Petrov then spun at Club, while Adrian Zaugg was next, going for a wild ride at Becketts, but at least he rejoined which was more than Arden teammate Bruno Senna did.
The Barcelona winner spun to a halt, crashing through advertising hoardings as he did so, without setting a time and he will start a dejected last.
Zuber set the benchmark on the first runs with a 1:28.246 lap, over three-tenths clear of Kazuki Nakajima (DAMS) and Glock. But with Glock spinning out as they rejoined on new rubber, the door was open for Zuber to take his first pole of the season.
Zuber lowered his best time to 1:28.043, staying two-tenths clear of Super Nova's Mike Conway, who was on inspired form on home turf.
Lucas di Grassi briefly held second for ART, but had to settle for third, while Nakajima will start fourth after failing to improve on his first effort.
Behind an angry Glock, Adam Carroll leapt into the top six for FMS, well clear of Michael Ammermuller (ART), Karun Chandhok (Durango), Roldan Rodriguez (Minardi/Piquet) and Nicolas Lapierre (DAMS).
Luca Filippi, second in the points at present, could do no better than 11th.
