Wilson is crowned as champion
Justin Wilson is the new FIA Formula 3000 champion after title rival Mark Webber suffered a violent crash on the opening lap at Spa's daunting Eau Rouge corner
Webber's Super Nova machine appeared to clip a damp kerb through the ultra-fast sequence of bends, and he struck the tyrewall at barely unabated speed. The right side of his car was destroyed in the impact and, although Webber got out of the car quickly, he was in obvious pain.
Thankfully, the Australian was later diagnosed with only heavy bruising to his right ankle.
Wilson only had to score a point at Spa to be sure of being crowned champion, but Webber's exit means the title was his.
"I can only thank the team - it's been a great year," said Wilson. "Even when the car was not the quickest, it was always good enough for a place on the podium.
"I've not really thought about what it would be like to be champion. A lot of people were saying 'you've done it already' but I just wanted to keep my focus on today's race. I was taking nothing for granted. I'm sure it will sink in over the next couple of weeks."
