Wilson impressed with new Lola
Formula 3000 champion Justin Wilson believes that Lola's new control chassis is a marked improvement over the old one that he has raced for the past three years
The 23-year-old is back behind the wheel for Nordic Racing at this week's Estoril test to give the B2/50 its second proper test. MG Lola driver Warren Hughes ran the car for the first time at Barcelona earlier this month.
Wilson proved quicker than the drivers in the old Lolas on the first day at Estoril on Tuesday, but only beat former team mate Tomas Enge by eight hundredths of a second.
"My first impression is that it is a lot better than the old car," said Wilson. "It is somewhere in between this year's F3000 and a Formula 1 car. It's handling characteristics are more in line with Formula 3 and F1."
Nordic has been charged with running the car on behalf of F3000 tyre supplier Avon, which has developed new Formula 1-sized rubber. Team manager Chris Mower said that there is a lot more speed to be found in the car.
"It is running with Barcelona gear ratios and on the main straight, Justin is on the limiter by the time he is parallel with the pitlane entrance. Also the other teams are using tyre warmers, we are not and there is almost a second in that alone. Justin is very happy with what he has found."
