Whitmarsh: Hamilton can dominate
McLaren F1 CEO Martin Whitmarsh believes Lewis Hamilton can go on to dominate this year's GP2 series after his performances so far this year
The reigning F3 Euroseries champion has won five races so far in his maiden season in the category, including a double victory on home soil at Silverstone last weekend.
His sprint race victory from eighth on the grid was particularly impressive, including a three-abreast pass of Nelson Piquet Jr and Clivio Piccione into Becketts.
Whitmarsh, whose McLaren team have supported Hamilton since he was in karting, believes that manoeuvres such as this prove that the Briton is a class-act and can go on to dominate this year's GP2 series.
"You can craft someone to be fast, he saw someone else's mistake and just went for it. But you cannot plan to do that, can you?" Whitmarsh said.
"That is a racing reaction, rather like Mika in Spa going the other side of Zonta around Michael, those sort of things are what makes a really class driver.
"At the moment Lewis has really done everything that we could have asked of him this year and it makes an intriguing prospect for next year.
"He can dominate and win GP2 this year - there no one doubts that now, and one way or another we hope he will be in F1 next year."
