Sarrazin dominates Jerez testing

Stephane Sarrazin underlined his title favourite status by dominating Formula 3000 testing at Jerez

The Frenchman, who took the place of 1999 champion Nick Heidfeld in the McLaren Junior team, topped the times on both days.

Former McLaren driver Mario Haberfeld was his nearest challenger, seemingly revitalised by his move to the Fortec team. DAMS' Franck Montagny, Red Bull Junior driver Enrique Bernoldi, Super Nova's David Saelens and Sarrazin's team-mate Tomas Enge also featured near the top of the timesheets during the two-day test.

Best F3000 newcomer was Astromega's Formula Nissan graduate Fernando Alonso, seventh fastest overall, narrowly ahead of fellow rookie Darren Manning. The Englishman missed day one of the test to focus on his F1 commitments with BAR, but was eighth quickest on day two for Arden.

Bruno Junqueira's disappointing week continued however. After being narrowly pipped to the Williams F1 drive by Jenson Button, the Brazilian could only manage the tenth fastest time on his return to F3000, 1.4s slower than main title rival and pacesetter Sarrazin.
