Rinland joins Coloni GP2 team

Coloni Motorsport, the Italian based ex-Formula 3000 team which has joined the debut GP2 series for this year, has announced the appointment of Sergio Rinland as a technical consultant for this year's racing programme, according to this week's Autosport magazine.

Argentinean born Rinland, who made his name as a designer for the Brabham Formula 1 team prior to moving up to the role of Technical Director for the Swiss-based Sauber outfit, has been brought out of semi-retirement to help develop the new Dallara-built car ahead of the series opener at the Imola track on April 23.

"It looks like an interesting challenge," he told Autosport about the new role. "I have known the Colonis for a long time, and they managed to convince me to go back on the road."

Coloni, which was twice runner-up in the GP2 predecessor Formula 3000, is in the process of moving the team to an as yet unknown English base, with the outfit's Formula 3 team remaining in Italy.

Team boss Paolo Coloni, who has stated his ambition to win the GP2 series within three years, has signed former Minardi driver Gianmaria Bruni to race, and is strongly rumoured to be signing Italo-American Richard Antinucci for the other seat. The move to England is part of a long-term plan to return the Coloni name to F1.

"The aim is to be back in F1," he noted. "That's where I was brought up, and that's where I want to be."
