Race: Enge takes first corner to flag victory in Spain
Tomas Enge took the first win of his 2001 assault on the International Formula 3000 Championship to take him to within one point of his Nordic team mate Justin Wilson and the lead of the drivers' standings
In what can only be described as a processional race, Enge took the lead almost immediately from pole sitter Wilson, who will be kicking himself for surrendering both first and second place at the first corner of the first lap.
"I made the same sort of start as Justin," said Enge, "but he missed the change to second gear, so I was able to take the opportunity into the first corner."
Wilson dropped to third behind his team mate and Bas Leinders while the rest of the field duly fell into line behind and maintained grid order with regiment-like precision. And there they stayed for almost the entire 32 laps of the race.
"It wasn't the great result I was looking for," said Wilson, "and that was down to the start. We get on well with each other so I'm not worried about us battling for the championship. We'll just do what we do now."
Mario Haberfeld came home fourth behind Wilson with David Saelens a distant fifth for the Junior European Minardi squad.
Antonio Pizzonia took the final point-scoring place in sixth after muscling his way past Patrick Freisacher and taking advantage of Darren Manning's misfortune on the opening lap.
The Brit out-braked himself and ended up in one of the Circuit de Catalunya's escape roads dropping the Arden driver from sixth place to 20th.
Further excitement came from Mark Webber who managed to push his Super Nova Lola up four places to seventh from 11th on the grid.
Perhaps the most entertaining part of the race was the string of stop-and-go penalties for Gabriele Lancieri. The Italian was awarded his first penalty after mechanics did not leave the grid on time before the start of the race. Then while exiting the pits Lancieri crossed the white line designed to keep drivers away from cars coming down the main straight, netting him another stop/go.
Then, to extend the comedy of errors the Durango driver did a repeat performance when returning to the track after his second penalty, leading to a 20 second time penalty, at which point Lancieri drove into the pits and threw in the towel.
Enge summed up the race by saying: "It was very similar to Imola. When you are very close to each other, you end up doing similar lap times and if you don't make mistakes, you finish as you start."
The teams head to the A1-Ring in Austria in two weeks time.
