Qualifying 2: Czech holds on

Tomas Enge took his first pole position of the Formula 3000 season despite failing to improve his time in the second of two qualifying sessions at the A1-Ring in Austria

The Czech's position came under attack from Coloni duo Giorgio Pantano and Enrico Toccacelo, who both got close to stealing pole. Toccacelo pulled out a quick one right at the end to go second, only for Barcelona race winner Pantano to lap even faster. But it wasn't quite enough to beat Arden driver Enge.

"I put two sets of tyres on in the second session like everyone else," Enge said. "But I was just not able to improve. It was kind of lucky that Giorgio didn't beat me. I was possibly overdriving slightly."

Mario Haberfeld was a big improver from the first session to move up from eighth to fourth. Antonio Pizzonia will start the race from fifth, ahead of another big improver Bjorn Wirdheim. Arden's other driver had only been 13th in the first session.

David Saelens improved, but still dropped from second to seventh. But neither Patrick Frisacher nor Sebastien Bourdais went quicker at all. For Bourdais, it ended his chance of equalling Juan Pablo Montoya's record of taking pole in the first four races of a season.
