Qualifying 1: Nightmare for Enge

Tomas Enge endured a disastrous start to his quest to score a hat-trick of Formula 3000 victories when his Arden Lola stopped out on the circuit after just one flying lap at Hockenheim

The Czech languishes in 20th and last place on the provisional grid ahead of this afternoon's second session. Having won at Silverstone and Magny-Cours, Enge will still be hoping to be in contention in Germany as he attempts to wrest the points lead from Super Nova's Sebastien Bourdais.

The Frenchman put in a superb performance to head the times, pushing Coloni's Giorgio Pantano off the top. The Italian had dominated the session up to the final minute when Bourdais pulled out a big lap.

Eneg's team-mate Bjorn Wirdheim was third fastest ahead of Durango duo Rodrigo Sperafico and Derek Hill, who jumped up to fourth and fifth towards the end.

The Petrobras team has some work to do before the second session after Ricardo Sperafico crashed as he lost it coming into the stadium section. He had been fifth fastest at the time, but by the end of the session he had slumped to ninth.
