Qualifying 1: Bourdais heads for pole

Imola race winner Sebastien Bourdais is on target to keep his 100 percent Formula 3000 qualifying record intact for this year after going fastest in the first of two sessions in Barcelona today (Friday)

Bourdais, who started both previous races from the front of the gird, headed former Prost Grand Prix driver Tomas Enge by just a tenth of a second in Spain.

Typically for this circuit, the quickest times were all set in the opening minutes of the session when the Avon tyres were at their best. Even those who bolted on the second of three sets available late in the session failed to improve, as the track appeared to be slower.

Coloni Motorsport's Giorgio Pantano heads the second row, with Astromega's Mario Haberfeld next up.

But a number of the normal frontrunners struggled to get on the pace during those early laps of the session. Interlagos winner Rodrigo Sperafico was only 10th, while his twin brother Ricardo Sperafico was down in 16th.

The second Petrobras Junior car of Antonio Pizzonia was a disappointing 12th. The Brazilian was unable to get out on to the track until the second half of the session because of a car problem.

The second session takes place later this afternoon.
