Petrobras take lead in qualifying

Brazilians Max Wilson and Bruno Junqueira gave the Petrobras Junior team a boost by taking the top two qualifying positions for the seventh round of the FIA Formula 3000 Championship

It was Wilson's second pole of the year - but the first since the opening race at Imola.

'It feels good to be back,' he said.

'I've had a tough time in the past couple of races and for one reason or another the results haven't been forthcoming, even when I have qualified at the front.

'The car was great today, however. I have always gone well at this circuit and I'm hoping to record my first win - at last.'

Team-mate Junqueira promised that both drivers will take a prudent approach to the first lap.

'We saw what happened to McLaren last week and we won't be doing the same,' he said.

'I'd rather chase a safe points finish than do something which causes an 80/20 risk of a shunt.'

Frenchman Franck Montagny (DAMS) was in the top three for the second straight race.

'I like low downforce circuits and having the chance to slide the car around,' he said.

'Last week I was knocked out contention at the first corner; this weekend I'm hoping for better.'

Championship leader Nick Heidfeld (West) can clinch the title this weekend, but the German needs a change of luck in the race.

He was vying for pole position when his car's engine cover blew off, punctured a rear tyre and spoilt his bid to repeat the pole position he picked up at Hockenheim in 1998.
