Pantano tops disrupted free practice

Giorgio Pantano topped the timesheets in free practice for the GP2 Series' visit to Hungary on Friday, but the session was affected by a red flag - and some inefficient marshalling - which meant the final reckoning was skewed somewhat

Pantano (Campos Grand Prix) lapped the Hungaroring in 1:28.992, two tenths faster than Kazuki Nakajima (DAMS), who was a further tenth up on Monaco winner Pastor Maldonado (Trident).

Luca Filippi was fourth fastest for Super Nova, ahead of series leader Timo Glock and iSport teammate Andreas Zuber.

The crucial 30-minute session was disrupted with eight minutes to go when Adam Carroll spun at the chicane and beached his car on the grassy run-off.

Marshals were unable to push him back onto the track, although one did manage to fall over trying. Two minutes later the session was red flagged, as Carroll's car would not budge.

It took another five minutes to find a tow truck to effect the removal of Carroll's FMS machine, and the session was restarted for a total of 53 seconds.

Others to spin or slide off included Bruno Senna (Arden), Filippi (twice), Maldonado and Andy Soucek (DPR). The latter was impressive once again in the early stages, when the track was still dirty. He finished seventh fastest.

Carroll was classified 11th, while series front-runner Lucas di Grassi was down in 12th. ART teammate Sebastien Buemi was 18th, Mike Conway (Super Nova) 20th and Senna 21st.
