Lopez sets new Ricard record
Jose Maria Lopez broke the GP2 track record at Paul Ricard, on the second and final day of pre-season testing for all GP2 teams and drivers
The Argentinean put in a blistering lap of 1:12.547 midway through the morning session yesterday, beating the former record of 1:12.838, set by Lewis Hamilton last month.
Lopez was one of six drivers to set laps within the 1:12 brack on the 3.853kms 3D configuration of the track. Second fastest lap of the day was set by Nelson Piquet Jr, whose lap of 1:12.716 was also the fastest of the afternoon session.
Frenchman Alexandre Premat, fastest overall on the first day, was third fastest with a lap of 1:12.834.
GP2 now leaves the South of France and will not be back at the Ricard circuit until the series' summer break. The next, and final, pre-season testing session will be held in Barcelona in ten days' time.
The 2006 GP2 season opens at Valencia on April 8th.
