Heidfeld looks to secure 1999 title
Two weeks ago, the champagne was on ice and Nick Heidfeld's participation in the German Grand Prix appeared to be just a formality
However, after spinning out of the race on lap four, the German had increased the pressure on himself this weekend.
Despite being the first time he has spun off this season, there is no doubt Heidfeld was looking forward to a winning his home race in front of German manufacturer Mercedes, with which he has close ties.
Instead, Heidfeld finds himself going to Hungary with a 23-point lead over his nearest rival for the Formula 3000 championship, Gonzalo Rodriguez, who trails 44-21.
The Uraguayan may still have a case for believing there's still a lot to play for in the championship.
There are still three races to go - at the Hungaroring, Spa-Francorchamps and the Nurburgring - where there are a potential 30 points up for grabs.
If Heidfeld fails to finish in Hungary, the likes of Bruno Junqueira, who is third in the title chase with 20 points, may feel they still have a chance to take the crown.
Junqueira will also be on a high after his win at Hockenheim.
At this late stage in the season, Rodriguez - who made his debut in the CART series last weekend in Detroit - will be looking to finish as high up in the championship as possible.
The closest battle is likely to take place between the Uraguayan on 21 points, and Junqueira on 20, as they race to decide second and third in the drivers' standings.
