Garcia fastest on day 1 of Jerez test

Spaniard Borja Garcia set the fastest time of the first day of the GP2 Series official testing at Jerez, ahead of the 2006 season

The day was split into a morning and afternoon session, with all 12 teams present - and a total of 25 drivers running through the day.

Garcia, who raced for Racing Engineering in the 2005 GP2 season, set the benckmark of 1:29.050 in the morning hours, driving for Spanish team BCN.

In the afternoon session, it was Alvaro Parente's opportunity to top the times while driving for 2005 champions ART, but his lap of 1:29.547 was some half a second slower than Garcia's morning time.

Testing at Jerez continues tomorrow, with several new drivers expected to make their GP2 testing debut - most notably the F3 Euroseries Champion Lewis Hamilton, who will be driving for ART with the mind of driving for the team next season.
