Enge leaps to the top of Monza test times

Tomas Enge jumped to the top of the FIA Formula 3000 testing times at Monza on Wednesday, but the Imola podium finisher was over half a second shy of Mark Webber's fastest time from Tuesday

Australian Webber was only fourth fastest in his Super Nova car, trailing Enge and the Petrobras cars of Antonio Pizzonia and Ricardo Sperafico. Although Enge was two-tenths clear of the pack, the next four cars were covered by less than a tenth before rain halted running in the afternoon.

"It's very, very tight around here between everybody," said Webber. "Qualifying will be extremely competitive but I am very confident we'll be in good shape come September [when the Monza race is scheduled]."

Second-placed Pizzonia said: "When I was on old tyres I was quickest, and when I was on new tyres I was second quickest, which I think is very good. In September it will probably be warmer than today, so I am not sure whether we are going to change the car or keep it the same. Overall, I am very happy with this test."

Andrea Piccini (European Minardi), Giorgio Pantano (Astromega) and Darren Manning (Arden) were next up, while the latter's team mate Viktor Maslov - second on Tuesday amidst claims of chicane-cutting - was 16th, 1.5secs off the pace.

Interlagos winner Justin Wilson again struggled, and was only 14th fastest in the second Coca-Cola-backed Nordic entry.
