Wilson's campaign gets back on track
Reigning FIA Formula 3000 champion Justin Wilson believes his Telefonica World Series campaign is back on track after a strong qualifying performance at Jarama, Spain
After suffering a disastrous opening weekend at Valencia, Wilson feels his Racing Engineering-run Dallara Nissan is now on a par with his competitors. His Valencia problem was traced to a split gearbox casing, which ruined the rigidity of his car and eventually forced him to retire.
"Everything is now working as it should be," said Wilson. "We've basically got things sorted out. I only realised how bad the gearbox problem was at Valencia when I spoke to [Ricardo] Zonta afterwards, who said it was spewing out oil when he came up to pass me. I thought it had only broken right at the end of the race."
Wilson is being helped out this weekend by British Formula 3 Championship-winning team boss John Booth, who is acting as a consultant.
"John being around has made life a bit easier," admitted Wilson, who will start tomorrow's opening race at Jarama from third on the grid. He slipped to seventh for the second event after going the wrong way on set-up.
"We had a bit of oversteer, so we picked up the front of the car, but that made it worse. We're still a bit confused about that, but I know we can sort it for tomorrow," he added.
