Valsecchi wins Nurburgring race 2
Davide Valsecchi has led home an Epsilon Euskadi one-two in the second round of the World Series by Renault at the Nurburgring
The 19-year-old Italian finished 0.4 seconds ahead of teammate Filipe Albuquerque at the flag. In what at times looked like a demonstration run, the Epsilon cars were nonetheless the only leading runners to lap in the 1:46 for a large proportion of the race.
Albuquerque provided one of the race's few overtaking manoeuvres, getting past Spaniard Miguel Molina on the exit of the Bit Kurve on lap three. Albuquerque swiftly closed down the gap on his teammate but, understandably, did not want to commit to a risky overtaking manoeuvre with Epsilon's first win since 2005 at stake.
Starting third, Valsecchi made the jump on pole-sitter Molina and front-row man Guillaume Moreau at the start. "I don't think Molina made a good job on the formation lap keeping his tyres warm," said Valsecchi.
"However, my rears were really hot, and I timed my start perfectly. I knew from yesterday's race how difficult was to pass so, once in the lead, I knew if I could just keep it clean I would have a good chance."
Molina dropped to finish a distant third after early pressure from KTR's Moreau faded. The Frenchman's attentions were diverted to defending his fourth position from a relentless attack from Alvaro Barba.
Barba in turn was chased hard by first Ben Hanley and then race 1 winner Sebastian Vettel. The fifth to eighth-place finishers were covered by just 1.5 seconds.
Alvaro Parente was penalised ten places on the grid for his misdemeanour in knocking into Mikhail Aleshin, yesterday. Parente clawed his way from 18th to 10th, and one championship point.
