Pic inherits WSR Barcelona pole
Frenchman Charles Pic inherited pole position for Sunday's Formula Renault 3.5 feature race in the series opener at Barcelona after rival Miguel Molina had his times disallowed for using his team-mate's tyres in qualifying
The Ultimate Motorsport driver held off a determined challenge from Pic by just 0.001s in a tense Super Pole session, but was subsequently found to have used Greg Mansell's tyres to achieve his time and was demoted to 12th.
Pic and third place qualifier James Walker had led the way in the two, preceding 20-minute qualifying groups that determined the 12 participants who progressed into Super Pole.
Walker's P1 Motorsport team-mate Daniil Move was also in the thick of the action in fourth, but the Russian tried too hard on the entry to the long right hand Repsol curve and his gravel-trapped Dallara required the session to be prematurely halted.
Carlin Motorsport team-mates Jamie Alguersuari and Oliver Turvey qualified behind Move in fifth and sixth positions.
Adrian Valles will start on pole position for this afternoon's reverse grid race courtesy of his eighth in Super Pole. The Epsilon driver will be joined on the front row by Marcos Martinez.
Adrian Zaugg missed out on a place in the Super Pole after running wide at the first corner and damaging his car's suspension on a speed bump.
"You have to pump the brakes on these cars," said a disappointed Zaugg. "I think, perhaps, I hadn't done it enough. The suspension and corner weights were damaged and after that the steering became skewed. We were third fastest before that happened, so I was sure I could have made the Super Pole."
