New line-up for KTR for Le Mans
KTR prepare for the final three Formula Renault 3.5 races, starting at Le Mans this weekend, with a revised driver line-up
Russian Formula Master race winner Sergey Afanasiev joins Formula Renault graduate Siso Cunill, who scored a point on his debut with KTR at the Nurburgring last weekend.
The arrival of the new pairing comes after a mixed first half of the year in which drivers Guillaume Moreau and Daniil Move decided to leave KTR after round five at the Hungaroring.
Team boss Kurt Mollekens commented: "Sergey Afanasiev came to the factory on Monday for a seat fitting, and spent Tuesday with the engineers going through all of the nuances of the category and of the Le Mans circuit. I think he knows Le Mans from his Formula Renault 2.0 days, but it is quite different in a World Series by Renault car.
"I am expecting that, at Le Mans, Sergey will have the same shock as Siso had on the Thursday at the Nurburgring. We are not going to be deceptive with the drivers and tell them anything other than it is going to be tough. We are also going to monitor closely with Sergey his physical state.
"Drivers are so keen to be given kilometres when they start that it is possible to wear them out too quickly. We gave Siso 420km on Thursday and, dealing with a slim 17-year-old, maybe that was a bit much. We need to make sure that we get quality running and not wear the drivers out.
"I don't believe either Siso or Sergey is doing this to go back to Formula Master of FR2.0. This is good experience for A1GP or GP2, but I believe they are thinking of entering WSR in 2009. With which team is another question, but if we do a good job, I'm sure we'll be talking."
