Jerez FV8 3.5 testing: Fioravanti leads Scott on opening day
EuroFormula Open racer Damiano Fioravanti set the fastest time on the opening day of Jerez's three-day Formula V8 3.5 test
The Italian recorded his standout lap of 1m28.607s in the afternoon session, an effort 0.239 seconds quicker than Formula Renault 2.0 ace Harrison Scott.
Both Fioravanti, at RP Motorsport, and AVF runner Scott were driving for teams they had raced with during 2016, albeit in junior categories.
The final test of the season started amid changeable weather conditions.
Fioravanti had a small off during the morning session, before recovering to set the overall fastest time of the day during the afternoon.
Scott took second in the quicker afternoon session, ahead of Lotus racer Rene Binder, who is expected to continue in the category in 2017.
The morning was led by Force India Formula 1 development driver Alfonso Celis Jr, who set a best time of 1m31.379s.
"It was a good session overall taking in account the messy conditions in the morning," said Celis Jr.
"There was a big track improvement.
"I finally managed to put everything together and I tried to do my job as professionally as possible, but this is just the beginning."
Five rookies tested in the morning after accepting invitations from FV8 3.5 organisers.
Formula Renault Eurocup runner-up and ex-European F3 driver Dorian Boccolacci was installed at Fortec Motorsports, led the early stages ahead of Eurocup rival Max Defourny at Lotus.
The session was red-flagged to retrieve the Teo Martin Motorsport machine of Asian Formula Renault 2.0 champion Josh Burdon, who was invited to test by Renault Sport.
The rookie list also included Scott, while Arden Motorsport hosted Telmex-backed Mexican EuroFormula driver Diego Menchaca.
As track conditions dried, GP3 driver Konstantin Tereschenko at Teo Martin Motorsport and experienced FV8 3.5 racer Yu Kanamaru - sampling Arden machinery - took spells at the top of the timing screens.
