Guerrieri on maiden pole at Le Mans

Esteban Guerrieri has claimed his first Formula Renault 3.5 series Super pole at Le Mans

The Argentinean Ultimate-Signature driver set a time of 1:25.124 to edge out championship leader Giedo van der Garde by two tenths of a second.

"My last pole was at Oschersleben in the F3 Euro Series back in 2006, hell it was a long time ago," said Guerrieri.

"The results have been getting better, but I was disappointed at the Nurburgring last weekend to miss out on making it through into the Super Pole by just four-thousandths, because the race pace was there.

"We changed the car successfully from qualifying today, where we had quite a bit of understeer. In fact, I didn't quite know what to expect because we had made so little running in the dry, and I didn't run any new tyres on Thursday."

Mikhail Aleshin put a run of poor form behind him to finish third for Carlin Motorsport.

"We have suffered with the same problems from Silverstone to Hungary, but I think we have solved it now, and this is the result," said Aleshin.

The Russian will be joined on the second row of Sunday's feature race by Guerrieri's teammate Fabio Carbone, who was fastest in qualifying this morning.

"In my case, the car was only good on the first part of the lap," said Carbone. "Still, it is a good result for the team, and for the championship, as both my rivals (for second in the standings) Julien Jousse and Salvador Duran had problems."

Robert Wickens and Charles Pic rounded out the top-six. Pic had set the fastest time, a 1:25.982, with a quarter of the 20 minute session remaining, before Van Der Garde and Wickens took it in turns to swap P1.

Guerrieri produced his pole lap with just 17 seconds left on the clock. It was the penultimate change of position before Fortec's James Walker displaced Miguel Molina for seventh.

Walker may regret his effort, though, as Nurburgring winner Molina will now start on "pole" for today's reverse grid race.
