Convincing win for van der Garde
Giedo van der Garde claimed a convincing victory at Spa-Francorchamps to extend his Formula Renault 3.5 Series lead
The win went some way to consoling the Dutchman, who was unable to capitalise on his superiority in race one yesterday after sustaining a high speed accident with Julien Jousse.
Marco Bonanomi had appeared to be the only driver capable of threatening van der Garde's dominance, but the Super Pole winner was unable to keep van der Garde at bay for long, as the Dutchman took the lead into Les Combes on lap four. Bonanomi settled for second, fending off of Mikhail Aleshin by two seconds at the chequered flag.
Salvador Duran consolidated a good weekend by adding fourth place to the second position secured in race one. KTR's Daniil Move surpassed himself. Having led the race briefly, courtesy of a making a late pitstop, the Russian executed a fine manoeuvre for fifth place on Miguel Molina at Les Combes, on the penultimate lap.
Move's KTR team-mate Guillaume Moreau was denied the fifth place points haul when he was slapped with a drive-through penalty. The Frenchman was mixed up in a tightly contested first corner incident at La Source.
A successful attempt to squeeze down the inside of Julien Jousse had the consequence of leaving the Tech 1 driver unable to avoid contact with Robert Wickens on his outside. For the second consecutive day Wickens' race effectively ended at the first turn, as both he and Jousse were forced into retirement.
Van der Garde had dropped a place behind the fast starting Aleshin away from the line, but overtook the Carlin driver into Les Combes on lap one. After dispensing with Bonanomi, the P1 Motorsport driver pulled clear at half-a-second a lap, before making his compulsory pitstop at the completion of lap seven.
Van der Garde enjoyed a lightning four-second change of tyres, and rejoined in sixth position. The winning margin was stretched to over seven seconds as he resumed his searing rhythm.
"Yesterday was a pity, I think Jousse made a big mistake," said van der Garde. "Today was a new day, though. I had too much wheel-spin at the start, but I was able to start on new tyres leftover from qualifying, and the car couldn't have been better."
