Extra Formula E race in Berlin replaces Brussels event

This season's Formula E schedule will feature an extra double header in Berlin after the race in Brussels was officially called off

Brussels was named on Formula E's season three calendar for July 1, but doubt arose after its original venue in the Belgian capital had to be scrapped due to a clashing event.

While work continued to find a new venue with the regional government, the race's cancellation had been expected prior to Thursday's World Motor Sport Council in Geneva.

The Berlin round will now expand to two days, June 10-11, at the Tempelhof airfield track, which itself was brought in to replace the downtown circuit near Alexanderplatz.

The additional race at Berlin will mean the current season will still feature 12 races.

Plans are being discussed for both races at Berlin Tempelhof to be run on a modified circuit from the one used in 2015.

It is believed that one possibility is a route through one of the former airport's terminal buildings.

Further details on the final layout are expected to come from the championship on March 27.

A straight swap of the Brussels date with other cities was also explored.

Autosport understands three alternative locations were considered, including Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan.

Astana, which is hosting a Future Energy Expo from June to September this year, had discussions with Formula E but the late nature of the switch is believed to have made arranging a race difficult.

A round in Astana is not believed to be a possibility for the all-electric championship in the short-term.

New York and Montreal will host Formula E's other two 2016/17 double-header events, in July.
