Two poles for Diefenbacher in German opener

Frank Diefenbacher made the perfect start to his German F3 Championship campaign at Hockenheim, scoring two poles for the opening rounds of the series

The former British Formula Ford racer outpaced the pack in Friday's qualifying session for Sunday's race, and did likewise in Saturday morning's session for today's race, which takes place later this afternoon. He was backed up by team mate Toshihiro Kaneishi for Saturday's race, but was run close by GM Motorsport's Tony Schmidt for Sunday's second round.

Schmidt is using the TOM'S-built Toyota engine which has proved so potent in the Japanese series over the past few seasons. Nicolas Stelandre will start Sunday's race from third on the grid, although the Belgian slumped to a disappointing eighth in Saturday's session.

Gary Paffett got to grips with the Hockenheim short circuit quickly, qualifying fifth and seventh in his Team Rosberg-run Dallara-Renault. Scotland's Andrew Kirkaldy, who secured a last-minute deal to compete, will start 15th in both races in his Swiss Racing Team Dallara-Opel.

The opening round of the series takes place today at 15.00 local time (14.00 BST).
