Title battle goes to Thruxton

Marc Hynes looks likely to clinch this year's Formula three title at Thruxton this weekend.

The 21-year-old, who drives for Manor Motorsport, goes to the final round of this year's Formula three championship with a 14-point advantage over rival Luciano Burti.

The Tetbury-based driver picked up extra points last weekend at Silverstone after Stewart driver Burti was excluded from third position.

The Brazilian was penalised for a manoeuvre he made on Hynes at the start of the race.

'We're just going to try our hardest to make sure we win the title,' said Hynes.

'The points are in our favour, we just have to finish in the top five to win it, but running fifth in the race would be far too nerve-wracking. It's better to win it from the front.'

Last weekend's incident has caused tension between the two drivers.

'I thought it was a good-natured championship so far, but I think it's changed today,' Hynes told Autosport Online on Sunday.

'I've certainly lost some of the respect I had for Luciano.'

To win the championship, Burti needs to finish first with Hynes sixth or lower in the race.

If he finishes second, the Brazilian can win if Hynes fails to score, and does not pick up a point for the fastest lap.

Burti is also in danger of losing second spot in the championship to Jenson Button.

The 19-year-old Promatecme driver, who won last weekend's Silverstone round, could snatch the position if he wins the race, gets fastest lap and Burti fails to score.

This would put the two on equal terms, but Button would clinch it due to his better finishing record.
