Race 1 qualifying: Paffett's pole

With the championship title long since out of reach, Gary Paffett proved a point at Hockenheim - well, he scored one at least - by taking pole position for this afternoon(Saturday)'s penultimate round of the German Formula 3 Championship

The young Englishman lapped his Team Rosberg Dallara-Opel in 2m06.849s, taking pole from Stefan Mucke, the man who will start Sunday's finale from first on the grid.

Mucke again just outpaced Mucke Motorsports team mate Markus Winkelhock for second place on today's grid, while the latter is looking to round off his impressive rookie season in style.

Late season form man Bjorn Wirdheim is fourth quickest, the Swede ahead of Joao Paulo de Oliveira from Brazil and Finland's Kimmo Liimatainen.

The battle for the title between Toshihiro Kaneishi and Frank Diefenbacher, however, continues to simmer rather than boil. After their lacklustre performances yesterday (Kaneishi eighth, Diefenbacher ninth), today the roles were reversed with Diefenbacher seventh and Kaneishi 12th.

At present, both are tied on 172 points in the championship, but Diefenbacher is leading on countback of race wins, four to two.

Saturday's race starts at 16.30 local time (15.30 BST) with an all Mucke Motorsports front row and Paffett down in fourth.
