Qualifying 2: Hayes to the fore
French F3 championship challenger Derek Hayes will start tomorrow's 18th round of the British F3 championship at Rockingham Motor Speedway from pole position.
Hayes, filling in for championship leader James Courtney at Carlin Motorsports, set a best time of 1m34.550s in dry conditions, some 0.250s ahead of Alan Docking Racing's Robbie Kerr. Hayes needed only nine laps to secure pole position, and will pull no punches in his efforts to claim victory on his second one-off appearance for Carlin.
Kerr, who will start the first of tomorrow's races down in tenth after missing out on the driest part of the first session, will be determined to make significant inroads into Courtney's 18-point championship lead.
"I'm fairly happy with second position on the grid," said Kerr. "I'm confident that we'll have a good race. We were caught out in the first session by being one of the first cars to cross the line, but it's a strange line-up at the front of the grid for the first race, which should make it interesting. We had a slight problem early in the second session, but we fixed it quickly and are well placed for the race."
Race one pole man Heikki Kovalainen will start third alongside Frenchman Bruce Jouanny, while Hayes' Carlin Motorsport team-mate Alan van der Merwe will share row three with scholarship pace-setter Adam Carroll.
Mark Taylor will start seventh, a significant improvement on his 15th place in the first session, while Matt Gilmore lies up tenth, only 0.732s off the pace.
In the scholarship class, Carroll's Sweeney Racing team-mate Robert Dahlgren lines up second and 13th overall, one place ahead of the impressive Karun Chandhok.
