Qualifying 1: Kovalainen on pole
Fortec Motorsport's Heikki Kovalainen maintained his British Grand Prix support race form to claim pole position for the first of Sunday's two British F3 Championship races at Rockingham. The Finn set a time of 1m35.812s in drying conditions in his Renault powered Dallara to take pole position by a massive 0.570s from French F3 championship star Derek Hayes, filling in for the indisposed championship leader James Courtney at Carlin Motorsports
The unfamiliar line-up at the head of the grid was continued with reigning Japanese Formula Dream champion Shinya Hosokawa lining up an impressive third ahead of Kovalainen's team-mate Fabio Carbone.
Stefan Hodgetts, who only took up the Motaworld drive in the last championship round at Brands Hatch, shares a surprise third row with the improving Dane Ronnie Bremer, relegating 2002 race winners Bruce Jouanny and Alan van de Merwe to seventh and eighth.
Robbie Kerr, eager to take advantage of Courtney's absence to close the 18 point championship gap, could manage only tenth after being one of the first of the front runners to cross the finish line on the final decisive run. But he was not the only potential race winner languishing in unfamiliar territory, with Mark Taylor some 2.798s down in 15th.
In the scholarship class, runaway championship leader Adam Carroll took pole from Adam Jones and Sweeney Racing team-mate Billy Asaro.
