Qualifying 2: Courtney back on top
British Formula 3 championship leader James Courtney was back on the pace during Saturday's qualifying for this weekend's second Silverstone race to take his fifth pole position of the season
After a brief glitch which saw the Carlin Motorsport ace drop to fifth during Friday's session, Courtney set a blinding pace to ensure the top spot on the grid for race two was all his own by setting the only sub 1m42s lap.
"This is where we should have been yesterday," said Courtney. "We haven't changed the car at all. I just managed to get a free lap."
With drivers met by cooler conditions, the Saturday morning session was faster and Robbie Kerr was another driver who had been dogged by traffic the previous day, but jumped up to second place in the second session.
Scholarship class leader Adam Carroll continued to cause a few red faces in the A division by taking the class B pole with an impressive third place overall. Such was the Ulsterman's dominance that just 10 minutes into the session he came into the pits and was out of his car.
Continuing his role as lead Manor Motorsport driver, Mark Taylor was fourth fastest, while Fortec Motorsport's Heikki Kovalainen finished fifth just ahead of team-mate and pole-sitter for race one Fabio Carbone.
Maintaining the pairing theme was the Promatecme duo of Bruce Jouanny and Ernani Judice in seventh and eighth respectively.
With championship rivals Courtney and Kerr together in fifth and seventh for race one and side by side on the front row for the second event expect fireworks.
