Paolo Montin Q&A

TOM'S driver Paolo Montin could not hide his delight after securing pole position for the Macau Formula 3 Grand Prix. The Far East event holds a unique place in the Italian's heart, because it was his stirring drive to second place in the 2000 event - when he had to help out with the preparation of his car - that enabled him to secure his deal with TOM'S for the past two seasons. AUTOSPORT's Jonathan Noble caught up with him after qualifying in Macau

"I worked so hard for this, and this is a really good prize for me. I want to keep this position now for Sunday night. I will be even more excited if that happens."

"Absolutely. We checked after qualifying the split times and I saw that Matsuura was faster than me, by about one second, in the top section of the track. I asked the team why, and it was because we were using really low downforce yesterday. I changed everything overnight and put some more downforce on the rear and it helped me a lot in that section. It actually made the car easier to drive and was much better under braking."

"It was in 2000 and I came here with three friends, and they helped me put in the best race of my life. After that second place it changed my career, because TOM'S called me and now two years on we are here in pole position."

"We have to show our performances, especially in this race because it is the most important race in Formula 3. Things will change if I get a good result here."

"I am not disappointed because we always stayed at the top and I fought with Takashi Kogure all season. He is really fast. But of course I am disappointed that I have finished second two times, but I did a really good job and gave 100 percent all the time."

"At the beginning of the season, my first target was always to win the Macau Grand Prix. As I have said, I want to keep first position until Sunday night and I have realised this ambition halfway now. I want to get the other half now."

"No, I just want to keep first position. I don't care who is behind me, I am just going to push 100 percent every lap. Maybe our pace will be faster than anybody."

"Yes, maybe it will give me some advantage over everybody else. Those four years of experience should help me a lot."

"We will see after this race. At this moment I am looking for a seat in Formula Nippon, I want to stay out there [in Japan]. But if I get a chance to test a Formula 1 car then I would go! There has been no contact yet, but if I get a good result here then maybe I will get a call."
