Nurburgring European F3: Max Verstappen tops damp qualifying

Max Verstappen delivered on the damp-weather promise he showed in morning practice by topping evening European Formula 3 qualifying in similar conditions at the Nurburgring

The Dutchman was the class of the field in the session, which started thoroughly wet but offered a dry line of sorts by the chequered flag.

The early times ultimately held little relevance, but Verstappen topped those too, posting a 1m41.199s before a Tom Blomqvist off led to a brief mid-session red flag.

Van Amersfoort driver Verstappen then chipped away at his time following the restart, ultimately coming down to a 1m37.660s.

Points leader Esteban Ocon led the challenge for much of the way, but was bumped from second to fourth by Ed Jones and Santino Ferrucci, who along with Verstappen were the last three to start laps before the chequered flag came out.

Fourth is hardly a disaster for Prema-run Lotus protege Ocon, though, given the Frenchman's 94-point lead in the title race.

Antonio Fuoco and Lucas Auer round out the top six.
