Mortara takes first win in race two

Edoardo Mortara underlined the importance of starting at the front of the grid and making a strong getaway at Brands Hatch with a lights-to-flag victory in the second Formula Three Euro Series event

The Signature-Plus driver comfortably beat Sebastien Buemi into Paddock and never looked like losing the lead.

A brief safety car period to remove race one winner Romain Grosjean from the Paddock Hill gravel trap failed to upset Mortara's rhythm and he went on to take victory in only his fourth F3 race.

Buemi shadowed Mortara throughout but also had the attentions of Kamui Kobayashi to contend with. The Japanese driver had made an absolutely lightning start to jump from sixth to third off the line and he was able to stay with the leading pair. Once again, however, the confines of the Brands Indy circuit prevented him from trying a pass on Buemi.

Some distance behind the leading trio came a three-car battle between Yelmar Buurman, Tim Sandtler and Nico Hulkenberg. Each looked quicker than the man ahead, but no-one was prepared to try a risky move and they finished in the order that they started.

The only Briton in the field, James Jakes, came home eighth, behind Yann Clairay.

Jakes made a poor start from eighth on the grid but pulled off a superb passing manoeuvre on the run to Druids to oust Harald Schlegelmilch from ninth. He then gained another place when Dani Close went off at Druids with 10 laps to go, but eighth was poor reward for the Briton's pace this weekend.

After Grosjean grabbed the lead of the title following race one, Buemi's second means that he is back atop the standings as the series prepares to head to the Norisring in a fortnight.
