Kennard takes maiden win at Spa

Jonathan Kennard took his maiden British Formula Three Championship win at Spa-Francorchamps on Saturday

It was also the first win of the season for Double R Racing.

The race itself, however, was farcical. Rain came down ahead of the start, and the officials decided to run two laps behind the safety car before the race got underway.

Kennard took the lead in the spray, from Maro Engel (Carlin Motorsport), Friday winner Sam Bird (Carlin) and Stephen Jelley (Double R).

Kennard built up a handy advantage before making a mistake under braking for the new Bus Stop chicane. This allowed Engel to pull alongside him on the run to La Source, but he was unable to make a pass.

Then Ricardo Teixeira crashed at Eau Rouge, which brought out the safety car after just three and a half laps of actual racing. With both the safety car and Kennard taking their time around the lengthy Ardennes circuit, there wasn't time for any further racing.

Points leader Marko Asmer's opportunities to move forward were limited by the spray, and he finished eighth. The weekend's results mean Bird has moved into a clear second place in the championship, but Asmer retains a healthy 60-point lead with eight races left.

Sergio Perez took his second National Class win of the weekend, with Franky Cheng second in an uneventful race.
