Bird dominates race one at Spa

Sam Bird (Carlin Motorsport) dominated an entertaining British Formula Three Championship race at Spa-Francorchamps this evening

The British driver led into Eau Rouge despite starting third on the grid, but he then lost the lead to Stephen Jelley (Double R Racing) during the course of the first lap.

But by lap three Bird was ahead again, and he pulled away in impressive style to make it two wins for the season. His first win came in Bucharest back in May.

Jelley and his Double R teammate Jonathan Kennard spent the rest of the race in a close battle for second. Kennard nipped ahead mid-race but Jelley stole the place back and held it for several laps - only to be passed by Kennard on the last lap.

The duo were joined by yet another Double R car in the closing stages, in the form of Atte Mustonen. But the Finn couldn't make a pass and finished fourth.

Front-row starter Maro Engel, and his Carlin teammate Mario Moraes, were among those to hit trouble on the first lap of the race. All this helped Marko Asmer's fine charge from virtually last through to sixth place.

Sergio Perez (T-Sport) edged into the National Class points lead by taking the class win, well ahead of Franky Cheng (Performance Racing).
