Jarvis snatches pole at Macau

Oliver Jarvis took a brilliant last-gasp pole position for the Macau Grand Prix on Friday, stealing the top spot on his final lap of the session

The Briton, who raced in the Japanese Formula Three Championship this year, has steadily increased his pace throughout the weekend and began to show his potential halfway through the incident-filled final qualifying session that was red flagged three times.

Jarvis first moved to the top of the timesheets with 25 minutes remaining and, after later improving his time, seemed to have the top spot sewn up until just one minute from the end when Kodai Tsukakoshi stole pole position.

Jarvis responded instantly, however, and retook the top spot as he took the chequered flag.

Provisional pole position man Marko Asmer found himself unable to beat Jarvis' time, but he still grabbed second place with his final lap of the session to demote Tsukakoshi to third.

Sebastien Buemi starts fourth, ahead of Edoardo Mortara and Romain Grosjean.

The first red flag was brought out after 12 minutes when Renger van der Zande crashed into the barriers on the exit of Paiol and left debris scattered over the track.

With 12 minutes to go Brendon Hartley hit the barriers on the exit of Lisboa and was left stranded in a dangerous position, bringing out the second red flag.

Then almost immediately after the restart Walter Grubmuller crashed into the barriers and caused the third stoppage of the afternoon.
