Jakes takes maiden win in race two

James Jakes won his first race in the Formula 3 Euro Series for Manor Motorsport at Magny-Cours on Sunday, the Yorkshireman taking the win after a fraught 25-minute event

Starting third on the reverse grid, Jakes lost a place to Manor teammate Franck Mallieux off the start, while a heavy shunt further back, between another Manor driver, Cyndie Alleman, and Mucke's Edoardo Piscopo brought out the safety car for a lap.

At the restart, pole man Jean Karl Vernay (Signature) led away from Manor's Yelmer Buurman, Mallieux and Jakes.

Jakes passed Mallieux with a smart move around the outside of the Adelaide hairpin, while Vernay and Buurman also briefly swapped the lead there.

Vernay stayed ahead until Buurman drove into the side of him at the hairpin with three laps to go. As they rubbed wheels, Jakes took his opportunity to dive past both of them and scorched away to a three second win.

Vernay finished second, ahead of Buurman, Mallieux and the Ultimate-run Mygale of Esteban Guerrieri, who finished fifth after Sebastian Buemi collected Tom Dillmann at the hairpin.

Yesterday's winner Kamui Kobayashi finished ninth after a trip through the Estoril gravel. Both he and ASM teammate Romain Grosjean were given five-place grid penalties for speeding under yellow flags yesterday. Grosjean finished seventh, just 0.3 seconds away from stealing the last point from Tim Sandtler.
