Engel on pole for Monza race 1
Maro Engel is set to get his season back on track after taking pole in the first British Formula 3 qualifying session at Monza today
The Carlin Motorsport driver has had a tough time of it lately, but bounced back from a particularly unhappy Snetterton to go quickest in a session dominated by drivers with experience of the Italian circuit.
Engel's fellow front-row man Stephen Jelley is a veteran of the series' 2005 visit to Monza, while in-form Atte Mustonen (Double R) had a test at the track during the winter. That means Sam Bird is the best of the true circuit rookies, having claimed fourth after topping the timesheets for quite some time at the beginning of the session.
The end of the session was quiet, with the top four parking in the pits to save adding any more wear to their tyres, which they will have to use in the race tomorrow.
Sergio Perez (T-Sport) snatched the National Class pole off Franky Cheng (Performance Racing) in the latter stages of the session.
