Carlin signs Calado for British F3

James Calado is to graduate to British Formula 3 next season, having retained the backing of the Racing Steps Foundation which funds his career

Carlin signs Calado for British F3

The Formula Renault UK runner-up Calado will race for top team Carlin, which has won the past two British F3 championships with Torro Rosso F1 driver Jaime Alguersuari and Red Bull junior driver Daniel Ricciardo.

Calado has impressed team boss Trevor Carlin with his pace and feedback during initial tests at Pembrey and Rockingham.

"We are delighted to welcome James into the British F3 team and very proud that the Racing Steps Foundation have entrusted us with another of their up and coming drivers for 2010," said Carlin.

"James has driven brilliantly in Formula Renault this year, and based on his performance in F3 testing with us, I'm sure that he will make a big impact in his first season in F3."

The 20-year-old, who took eight race wins on the way to second in Formula Renault this year, was delighted to secure the Carlin deal.

"British F3 is a fantastic championship and has proven time and time again to be a great feeder series and Carlin is clearly the team to beat," said Calado.

"I'd like to thank the Racing Steps Foundation for their continued support and for such a great opportunity in 2010.

"I've spent a few days testing in the F3 car and the downforce and grip is just amazing. It's great that my drive for next season has been secured so early as I can really start to concentrate on winter testing so I'm fully prepared for the new season."
